Home Office - airport operations service
INTRO
I worked on a Home Office product used to support passport control operations at UK airports. As part of a wider UX and design review, I standardised dashboards and other data visualisation elements, creating a more consistent system for presenting operational information. I also designed a new flight-flagging feature that helped Border Force staff identify flights carrying higher numbers of passengers from selected nationalities, making it easier to focus attention where operational risk was likely to be higher.
ROLE: Lead UX Designer
DATE: January 2023 – October 2023
OVERVIEW
The product supported operational planning across airport environments, helping teams understand expected passenger flow and respond more effectively. A key challenge was that dashboards, tables and other data views had been designed inconsistently over time, which made the interface harder to scan and use confidently.
WHAT I WORKED ON
Reviewed the existing dashboard and data visualisation patterns
Standardised colours, typography and component usage across operational views
Improved the consistency of tables and dashboard elements
Designed a nationality flagging feature using nationality / ICAO codes
Added tagged indicators to flight records showing how many matching passengers were on board
Helped make operational data easier to scan and act on quickly
WHY IT MATTERS
This was a high-pressure operational environment where clarity and speed of understanding mattered. The work improved the consistency of the product overall while adding a practical feature that helped Border Force staff identify flights more likely to require closer attention.
OUTCOME
The result was a more consistent operational interface, with clearer dashboard and table patterns, plus a targeted workflow feature that made flight data more actionable for frontline teams.
